Maybe you like to wash your hair every day. Maybe you got really hairy legs to shave. Maybe your teenager thinks it is okay to cut her hair and wash it down the drains. Whatever the issue, you need to get it resolved before it leads to huge problem. Accumulated hair can cause drain clogs, preventing water from exiting your tub, bathroom or sink from draining properly, so water accumulates in them.
As they always say, ‘to prevent is better than to cure’, so here are some preventative measures you can use to stop hair from going down your drain:
- Strainer: A kitchen sink strainer is pretty cheap and once it can fit in your tub drain. Try to get one that is made of wire mesh and has small tight openings that will allow water to pass through, but never hair.
- Mesh: Get a little piece of tightly woven mesh fabric or wire with very small openings. You need to cut it a bit larger than the opening of the drain. Then you need to hot-glue some sort of weights, like pennies, around the edge of the mesh in order to hold the mesh down over the drain, then the mesh will catch whatever hair is attempting to go down the drain.
- Drain Cover: They cover or create a barrier over the drain to prevent hair and other debris before it goes down the drain. They fit in your drain similarly to the way the strainer fits in the kitchen sink. They can be easily removed and cleaned when necessary.
