You don’t think about it until it’s just about time to pay your bills, but water costs a lot! It’s different in different countries, but that doesn’t change the fact that we should never waste it. It’s way too precious! Take a look at all the places around the world where water is so scarce that it would make your home look like Heaven. That’s why you should follow these guidelines on how you can save water: Don’t let the water run while you’re shaving or brushing your teeth. Many old faucets use 3.5 a minute! New faucets used less – 1.5 gallons a minute. You can replace your old faucet’s aerator with a 1.5 or a 0.5 GPM aerator and it will save you some water and some money. Don’t take baths, take showers. Did you know that taking a bath used much more water than taking a shower? That’s right. Oh, and replacing your shower heads can reduce your water usage too. Use low flow heads instead of the regular models. Do full loads of laundry only. If you wash your clothes only when you have a full load, you tend to save much more on your overall water cost. If you don’t have a choice but to wash, then make sure the water doesn’t completely fill up with water. Get a new toilet. Newer toilets actually use much less water than those older ones made before 1993. They use only 1.6 gallons, while the older versions use about 3.5 gallons. Then there’s another option: “Some old toilets can be retrofitted with a new flush valve without having to replace the toilet, check with the toilet manufacturer for details.” Deal with water leaks immediately! This is a major problem that wastes a whole lot of water. In most homes there are one or more leaks present. The trick is to identify it and fix it as soon as you can, to save yourself that precious water and money. We can help you do that. You can contact us for even more water-saving tips. We’re those professionals you need to call if you have plumbing problems like these and more. We’ve got experienced and affordable plumbers in Ottawa. With just one call, we can help you solve your plumbing needs and offer you emergency plumbing services.
Short answer? Maybe. Not every plumbing problem requires a plumber, but it is important to get it fixed right away. Take the top off the back of the toilet and take a look inside. You’re going to need to get your hands in there to replace some parts. If you’re already having trouble imagining going any further, give us a call. If you are ready to roll your sleeves up, let’s get going! Check the flapper to see if it works. Try to flush. If the flapper isn’t working, you probably just hear a clunk, and nothing moves inside. Check to see if the chain is attached. If it’s just the chain, and the flapper is working fine, you can reattach a (new) chain and everything will be good. If the flapper itself is broken (often where the chain attaches), you’ll need a new one. Turn off the water supply. Not to the whole house, just to the toilet. Then flush a couple of times to get rid of the water in the tank. If you need a whole new flapper, take it out gently. Place it safely in a plastic bag for the trip ahead. Now is the time to go to the store to pick up new toilet guts. They sell them at Canadian Tire or Home Depot or your local Ottawa plumbing supply store. Take the old flapper so you make sure you get the right one. If not, find one that says “Universal” and everything should work. Put the new toilet flapper in place and connect up the chain like the old one was. Now turn the water back on and flush. (And cross your fingers.) Do you need a plumber for your toilet repair? Did that work? If so, you don’t need a plumber. If not, turn the water back off and call Canada Plumbing at 613 890 7700. Or, send us a text. Attach a picture of the inside of the toilet (if you can). We’ll try to walk you through how to fix it, but if not, we’ll be there to help! We are your Ottawa plumbing service! Tankless hot water heaters are not new. Newly popular perhaps, but not new. So, many homeowners in Ottawa want to know more about the plumbing, and if you’ll need a plumber to install one. Tankless hot water heaters have gained recent popularity in the Ottawa area because of their eco-friendly, energy savings. On-demand hot water means you are not keeping a huge tank of water hot all day when you don’t need it. Because of our winter temperatures though, many times a small regular hot water tank works in series with a tankless water heater. Otherwise, you don’t get water hot enough when it’s cold outside. How to Know if your Home is Right for a Tankless Water Heater A tankless heater generates hot water instantly with high-powered electric coils or gas burners. All the power is needed “on-demand”. It uses less energy overall. Natural gas units save about 22% on your bill in most situations. Even with the savings, a tankless water heater may not be the best choice. If your home does not already have the plumbing for natural gas it’s a huge project. Or your electrical system might require an upgrade to handle the load of an electric on-demand system. So, a quick inspection and the answers to a few questions is all it takes. That way, the plumber from Canada Plumbing knows if a tankless heating system could work for you. Do I need a Plumber to Install a Tankless Hot Water System? Probably, yes. Since the natural gas units tap into the gas lines, legally, a plumber with the appropriate ticket has to make the connection. So, if you don’t have the right ticket (and you would know if you did), then you need a plumber for a natural gas installation. Electrical installs are somewhat less technical. If you feel competent to deal with both electricity and water together you can give it a go. Most Ottawa homeowners prefer to leave the plumbing to an expert, especially when the electricity is so close by. Call us at Canada Plumbing at 613 890 7700. We’ll happily talk you through the process of deciding to switch to the energy savings of tankless or give you other options. We are your Ottawa plumber!
"Great service call by Jamie. He is very attentive and suggested some parts that needed to be replaced, thus avoiding problems later on. Overall excellent work. Highly recommend this company"
"Jamie Mcpherson was very friendly, prompt and extremely professional. It was late in the evening when I had him out to fix the faucet in my bath tub and even entertained my 4 yr old who was curious about what he was working on. I would happily recommend his services in the future to anyone who needs a plumber."
"Jamie and Corey did a fantastic job replacing our old water heater. Fast service, good quality work and friendly. Highly recommended!"
"Corey diagnosed the problem very quickly and came back the very next morning to replace and update my 60 year old taps! It looks amazing and the quality of work shines through. Corey was very pleasant and personable and cleaned better than I do before he left!
This is the second time I have called Canada Plumbing (I was so happy with the toilet repair the first time I called again for my leaky bathtub taps) and now I wouldn’t call anyone else!"
"Call a plumber, call a surgeon, call a barber. They all do jobs you shouldn't do yourself. Speaking of job #1, henceforth, I will call Canada Plumbing. The company did a good job, a clean one, and they made good decisions on parts. They explained the work thoroughly without talking-down. Cory, from Canada Plumbing, blessedly replaced the shower hose, including the cobra-thing that spits out water (funny I did that three-weeks ago), and the faucet below, which had seized up. The new parts seemed good quality to me. Showering will now be a luxury instead of something analogous to washing the dog indoors. Same deal with the kitchen sink, or rather faucet, which was leaking in mysterious, increasingly dangerous patterns. I knew it needed replacing. I did it myself 15-years ago. This time I didn't feel like exhausting my lexicon of four-letter words in the first couple of hours of a 30-hour haul, broken by visits to Home Depot. Cory from Canada Plumbing started at 9:15am and was done and wiped-up by 11am. Pleasant surprise: both jobs totaled less than $500. Bathroom PLUS kitchen including all parts, labor and whatever. Canada Plumbing had come well-recommended and it goes well-recommended."
"I have called on Jamie and his team on multiple occasions to help out with various plumbing issues, and some of them on an urgent basis. He's always incredibly quick to respond and a real professional. His fees are always fair and he's excellent at staying true to his quote. Super honest and down-to-earth business to deal with - I would highly recommend them."
"Can't say enough about the service provided by Jamie and Corey - both top notch people and solved my issue quickly and effectively. Thanks guys!"
"From the beginning to the very end it was a pleasure working with Canada Plumbing. I will definitely use their services again when needed."
